According to Title 4 of the US Code….”It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flag staffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.”
Since I really like the look of an illuminated flag, and it being a law and all…I wanted this to be one of the first projects I undertook. I purchased an outdoor sunset to sunrise timer, this one from Lowes, and it’s worked out great. Not only was I able to run the 800 lumen LED flood light for the flag, but there were also enough plugs to run our Christmas lights. It’s been a few months and it’s been running perfectly.
